Welcome to the Hertfordshire Music Service (HMS) Environmental Sustainability web page. You'll find information about actions that have been taken, outlines of plans, as well as links to useful sites.

The HMS Environmental Sustainability Policy sets out the service's commitment to environmental sustainability.

Some of the actions underway

This year, we're making it a top priority to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions generated by HMS. Understanding our starting point is crucial to see where reductions can be potentially achieved.

Some projects have been started at Mid Herts Centre for Music & Arts (Mid Herts):

  • enhance nature. We've built our first Bug Hotel and introduced a dedicated wildlife area
  • installed recycling bins onsite
  • our Instrument Manager is working with partner organisations to recycle instruments that can't be repaired to reduce landfill waste
  • exploring energy efficiencies

How can you help?

If you have any questions, ideas or comments, please do contact us at hms.projects@hertfordshire.gov.uk, we'd love to hear from you.

Recycle bin

Help us to ensure waste is disposed of responsibly by putting any rubbish into the correct recycling bins. This will ensure bin contents are not contaminated.

Plant growing

Help us to keep our grounds litter free so we can all enjoy the area.

Car running

Please don't keep your car engines running whilst parked to help with air quality.

Our new Bug Hotel

We have built a new bug hotel at our Mid Herts Centre for Music and Arts to:

  • Encourage biodiversity

Bug hotels provide shelter and nesting sites for various beneficial insects like solitary bees, ladybugs, and butterflies. These insects play crucial roles in pollination and pest control.

  • Support pollinators

Many pollinators, such as solitary bees, need safe places to nest and hibernate. With declining bee populations, providing a habitat can help support these essential creatures.

  • Aesthetic and creative

Our bug hotel is made from various materials and designed to be visually appealing, adding an interesting feature to our centre.

  • Help combat habitat loss

As natural habitats are reduced due to human activities, bug hotels offer a safe haven for insects that might otherwise struggle to find suitable environments.
