Have your work performed or perform a live set at the 2023 Hertfordshire Schools' Gala!

Hertfordshire Music Service is looking for young people aged 21 and under to be involved in the opening piece for the 2023 Hertfordshire Schools' Gala.

The performance will likely include two main roles who will collaborate on the project to write and perform the opening piece for the 2023 Hertfordshire Schools' Gala at the Royal Albert Hall. This piece will showcase music making across Hertfordshire, combining pre-recorded electronic and live orchestral performance by the Hertfordshire Schools' Symphony Orchestra. We are looking for:

- A composer/songwriter to create the piece.

- A producer/DJ to perform the track live, combining pre-recorded audio-visuals with live instrumentation.

The successful composer will subsequently work with an established composer/orchestrator and electronic musician to prepare the piece for performance on Sunday 30th April 2023 at the Royal Albert Hall. It is hoped that the pre-recorded element will include use of recordings/samples of a culturally diverse range of live music from across the county.

How to Apply for the Composer/Songwriter role

  • It is not necessary to submit a written score of your work. Submissions should be made as a WAV audio file. At this stage, we are seeking the most imaginative musical ideas, rather than technical accomplishment.
  • The piece should be 2 minutes in length. Energy and excitement should build as the piece progresses.
  • The piece will lead directly into a live performance of ‘Give Life Back to Music’ by Daft Punk.
  • The joy of music-making and dance is to be celebrated at the concert and you may like to link your work to this.

How to Apply for the Producer/DJ role

  • Please provide example(s) of your work, demonstrating a high level of competence performing live using music technology such as an Akai MPC Live to trigger pre-recorded audio samples.
  • You should have experience of performing live to a click track.
  • Please submit your entry along with brief overview of your musical experience/qualifications.
  • Send us your submission by completing this online form by Friday 29th April 2022: https://surveys.hertfordshire.gov.uk/s/hms-gala-composer/
