Hertfordshire Youth Jazz Ensemble
Required standard: Grade 7
Age range: 13 - 18 years
HYJE meets for a 3-day course in the summer holidays and for workshop days during the autumn and spring term.
The Hertfordshire Youth Jazz Ensemble works both in full and small ensembles (combos), exploring the many sides of jazz including Rock and more Contemporary collaborations. Tuition is provided in all aspects of jazz performance including vocal coaching and improvisation.
Students also have the opportunity to work with the band on their own compositions with some being featured in concerts and even conducted by the student. Highlights have included a visit to the Civic Theatre in Chelmsford under Jeffery Wilson and a performance of Stan Tracey’s Genesis Suite directed by Clark Tracey.
HYJE recorded their first CD in Spring 2006 and recently enjoyed a return visit from Clark Tracey for their summer course 2010, featuring a performance with British Jazz legend Stan Tracey.

Members for the Hertfordshire Youth Jazz Ensemble are generally selected from the area jazz groups across Hertfordshire. However, if you are interested in participating with the group please do complete the audition application form on the auditions page.

- Summer Course July 2010 held at Mid-Herts Centre for Music and Arts, Hatfield leading to a concert at the Fairway Tavern, Welwyn Garden City. Directed by Clark Tracey, featuring a performance with british jazz legend Stan Tracey.
- Spring Course March 2010 held at Mid-Herts Centre for Music and Arts, Hatfield. Open event with players from North Herts Jazz bands from Stevenage and Hitchin and St. Albans Stage Band, with guest director Mark Bassey.
- Autumn Course in October 2009 held at the Mid-Herts Centre for Music and Arts, Hatfield leading to a concert on 25th October 2010 at the Civic Theatre, Chelmsford
