Make your school a Musical School

We can work with you to provide as wide range of high quality musical experiences for the children in your school

FIRST ACCESS (formerly Wider Opportunities) is a large group teaching initiative for KS2. Pupils learn music through a wide range of instuments including Strings, Brass, Woodwind, African drums, Ukulele and Singing. An experienced instrumental teacher visits the school and works, with the class teacher, to deliver a fun-packed programme of instrumental work, musical games and singing. After the initial experience, some children may want to continue learning in smaller groups.

Singing Opportunities - we can help you introduce, develop and celebrate singing in your school! Our Singing Strategy embraces a wide range of activities including introductory packages for Early Years and KS1 and KS2, tailor-made programmes for clusters of schools, KS1 and KS2 Singing Festivals, the Chorister Outreach Project and our biennial celebration of singing at the Royal Albert Hall.

There are opportunities for CPD for teachers at all stages of their development.

In-School Advice and Support - contributing to school improvement and the raising of standards. Deena Day, Music Adviser, offers visits to support any aspect of classroom music - subject review and audit, coordinator support, in-school training sessions, resources etc ...

Primary Music Consultancy - This can be anythng from a one-off visit to a long-term partnership. All our support packages are bespoke so just call to discuss what would be the best for you. Involving demonstration lessons taught by a specialist, this aims to train teachers to deliver the curriculum themselves through observation, joint planning and careful selection of appropriate resources. Choose to target the whole school, a key stage or even a single class. Single PMC demonstrations are also available.

The Professional Development of Teachers

We provide a wide-ranging programme of training courses to support teachers in their delivery of National Curriculum Music. Some of these will come under the banner of our Singing Strategy - others will target areas of musical learning such as composing or will be designed to support music leaders in schools.
Many of our courses are available in central locations such as Music Centres or we can create courses for individual schools or clusters of schools based in a convenient location for you.
We also provide music-focussed staff meetings and in-school training days - focussed learning AND fun team building!

Access to Music Teaching Resources

At our resources base we have a collection of most of the printed and listening resources published for class music plus an extensive collection of plays and performance music such as Christmas shows. Due to high demand we are unable to offer full lending faclities but some items may be lent out by arrangement.
Schools having training sessions may have a selection of resources out on loan for a time and class teachers are welcome to visit Stevenage Music Centre to browse - just call first so that the room can be made available. Many teachers have found this to be a useful way of deciding how to spend their limited budget.
A further range of resource materials is available on this website, and several HMS in-house publications are available to buy - see the Resources section.

Music Making Workshops and Curriculum Enrichment Events

We work closely with Area Music Heads to provide music-making events for primary school pupils. Some of these are yearly events, such as town festivals and singing days and some are one-off, in response to demand from schools.
We are happy to respond to any ideas or requests you may have, such as extension days for Gifted and Talented children or themed music workshops. Please call for further information.

Specialist Music Teaching for your School

Our teams of Primary Music Consultants can visit schools weekly to deliver the music curriculum over 33 weeks per year. All of our teachers are well-qualified and experienced musicians who are happy to teach through the 5-ll age range.

A specialist music teacher will plan and deliver high quality lessons fulfilling the requirements of the National Curriculum, personalised to the needs of your school. They will also be available for your plays and presentations, subject to timetable.
This service can either be used like the Primary Music Consultancy, as a way of training your teachers through observation of good practice, or it can be an option to cover PPA time. In either case, we recommend working closely with your specialist to achieve maximum impact.

Current Prices : Full day £300, Half day morning £185, Half day afternoon £130, Hourly by negotiation £60.

Secondary Singing Workshops

Secondary schools can apply for a singing workshop from one of our expert animateurs. This could be to help extend repertoire, explore a new style or genre, start up a new group or support in the preparation of an exam ensemble. In some cases it can also be a professional development opportunity for school based staff.

Booking is now open for dates from June 2019 and into the academic year 2019-20.
