St Albans Information about Groups

All groups work with experienced and specialist staff to develop their instrumental and vocal skills through listening and playing/singing as part of an ensemble. They rehearse a wide variety of music and give regular concerts in the locality and further afield.

Woodwind/Brass/Percussion Groups 

Wednesday: 16.30-17.30
...approximately Grade 1 standard up to about Grade 3 or equivalent
This group is for children who are at Primary school. It introduces children to the joy of playing in a large ensemble and while introducing good habits of ensemble playing, concentrates on playing light music with the accent always on fun.
Wednesday: 17.45-18.45
...for players of Grade 3 standard and above or equivalent
The Intermediate Wind Band is for players who are in at least Year 7 at school. Again, a wide range of music is explored with the emphasis on enjoyment as well as reaching the highest possible musical standards.
Thursday: 18.30-19.30
...for students Grade 1 (or equivalent) and above
This group is for young musicians who aspire to play in the main SAMS Big Band. It covers all the basics of performing so that young players have all the necessary skills to progress. Providing a less complicated but easily enjoyable repertoire, Big Band 2 is a great environment to learn reading music, playing as an ensemble and improvisation. BB2 is for students playing Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet and Rhythm Section of Grade 1 (or equivalent) and above.

Thursday: 20.00-21.15
...this group offers young musicians of ALL school ages the chance to perform Big Band Jazz at a very high level. In previous years the Band has performed concerts outside the Music School with other young musicians in the Herts & South East area, played at the finals of the National Music for Youth Festival and performed concerts with top UK Jazz artists. The Big Band is for students of Grade6+ (or equivament) playing Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet or Rhythm section
Tuesday: 17.30 -18.00
...for players of about Grade 5 standard or equivalent
This group comprises Flute, Clarinet, Oboe and Bassoon and explores the repertoire of Woodwind chamber music. Sometimes, they join with Sinfonia in order to play orchestral music.

String Groups and Orchestras

Tuesday: 16.30-17.30
...pre Grade 1 - approaching Grade 3
This group is for young String players who are at Primary school. They play a wide range of music in four parts and have lots of fun.
Tuesday: 16.45-17.45
...about Grades 3 - 6 standard
This group is for young String players playing a range of classical music as well as lighter repertoire. Particular attention is paid to good string playing habits.
Saturday afternoons: various times
group lessons are held for pupils of Suzuki violin and cello where children come together to play the music they have been studying individually and to play music in ensembles
The groups give concerts every term.
Tuesday: 18.15-20.15
for players of at least Grade 6 standard
This is the local Youth Orchestra. Entry is by audition. This orchestra plays to a very high standard and has regular full and sectional rehearsals in which a variety of orchestral repertoire is studied.

Musical Theatre

Sing Dance Play
Saturdays 10.00-11.00 for 3-6 year olds.
A Music Group for 3-6 year olds who are interested in singing, dancing and playing instruments.  With the opportunity to progress to Children’s Music Theatre Group or take up music lessons as the next step up.

MUSIC THEATRE 11-19 and 7-11
Monday: 19.00-21.00
West Herts Youth Music Theatre, Director Shen Woolf
Our Musical Theatre Group is for 11- 19 year olds interested in singing, dancing and acting.  The group works with three specialist teachers in dance, drama and music.  They meet for a series of weekly workshops which culminates in a production in a local theatre at the end of the Easter Term. 
Saturday: 14. 15-16.00
West Herts Children's Music Theatre, Director Shen Woolf
Our Children's Theatre Group is for 7 - 11 year olds who are interested in singing, dancing and acting.  it is a feeder group for the West Herts Youth Music Theatre Group, where children develop their musical theatre skills. 


Tuesday: 16.45-18.15
...for students in Years 8-13 at Secondary school
This group is an advanced upper voice choir who perform sophisticated part songs. There are opportunities for solo work, voice training, national events and the group perform both locally and further afield.

This group meets at Dacorum Music School


Musicianship Groups

Come and enjoy a fun musical experience built to develop your child’s social, musical and sensory abilities. Using rhythm, action songs, nursery rhymes and percussion instruments they will enjoy learning new skills whilst making new friends.

Class 1 (3+) 11.15 – 12.00 noon (An adult needs to accompany the child)

Class 2 (5+) 12.00 – 12.45 pm

Class 3 (7+) 1.00 – 1.45 pm ...these classes take place approximately once a fortnight and dates for the term are advertised at the Music School. In these classes, children learn about music through movement. They also sing and play percussion instruments as well as having fun.

Summer dates

Thursday: 3.45-4.30, 4.30-5.15 and 5.15-6.00pm
...these classes prepare pupils for the Grade 5 Theory written examination which is needed before the Associated Board Grade 6 practical exams can be taken 
Students should consider joining these classes when they have reached about Grade 3 standard on instrument or voice.  The groups are small and friendly and pupils work at their own pace.

Saturday: Juniors 9.00-11.00, Teens 11.00-13.00
...Guitar, Drums, Vocals, Keyboard, Recording & Gigs!
Sessions include group lessons in workshop format led by professional tutors with wide experience in popular music.
