Our Favourite Songs

We think being inspired by others is a key part of writing our own songs.

Each week we'll add commercially released songs chosen by the team involved with the project.

Check out the songs, and suggest your own favourite for consideration to the.mix@hertscc.gov.uk

Week 1, 'Small Bump', Chosen by Songwriter 2012 Ambassador, Ije

'This is one of my favorite songs, mostly because of the beauty of his lyrics. It's such a moving song and would move a lot of people, whether they had experienced loss before or not.

I like how his songs are very meaningful and relates to anyone that listens to his music. Plus the whole song is generally very catchy, which makes people remember this amazing song!'  IJE

Week 2, 'May You Never', Chosen by Songwriter 2012 Tutor, Ben Smith

(I'm really glad Ben chose this, as it saved me choosing it! It's also is a possible source of the percussive guitar tapping in the above Ed Sheeran song!) (Michael)

'One of my favourite songs. Great playing and great lyrics. The story goes that it very nearly didn't make it on to the album (Solid Air) as various attempts to record it with a full band didn't come out too well. On the last day of recording after all the other musicians had gone home, the producer asked him to try it out with just acoustic guitar and vocal. He then went in and did both together in one take.' Ben

Week 3, Ben Howard - 'The Fear' chosen by Songwriter Ambassador, James Christie

'I think Ben Howard is brilliant. He has wonderful guitar playing skill and technique. As I am a very keen guitarist, his guitar parts in all his songs are awesome, particularly in his song 'Further Away'. This song is my favourite simply because it has good guitar, brilliant music and very powerful lyrics and a powerful sound. I look up to him as a musician because he is young and yet has all the skill and musicianship that he has. Giving his album a proper listen is definitely a good idea.' James
