Concert Season is here!

Concert season is upon us! There are a huge number of activities and events at our schools and music centres over the next few weeks. Look at our "Whats On" page or the Creative Hertfordshire listings for details of events near you. Our county groups are also performing, with County Youth Choir this Saturday (3rd December) at St John's Boxmoor (Hemel) at 19:30 with a programme including some gospel music - so do come along! Our County Youth Orchestra, conducted by Peter Stark are delighted to be performing with the internationally acclaimed (Hertfordshire raised!) cellist Guy Johnston on 21st December at Haileybury College Hertford. It is the same venue for our Hertfordshire Schools' Symphony Orch on the 22nd December for which we welcome their new conductor Ben Glassberg. All these concerts across the county are a tremendous showcase of our young musicians and also all the hard work and support given to them by both their teachers and families.

Government commits to ongoing funding for Music Education

I am delighted to announce that the Department for Education has released information regarding funding for Music Education Hubs. Hertfordshire Music Service is the Lead Partner for the Hertfordshire Music Education Hub.

"A multimillion pound investment in music and arts education will help hundreds of thousands of young people from all backgrounds enjoy potentially life changing cultural activities, Schools Minister Nick Gibb announced today (18 November 2016).

Over the next 4 years the government will provide £300 million to a network of 121 music education hubs to work with schools, local authorities and community organisations to get more young people taking part in music and arts."

This is tremendous news for Hertfordshire and heartnening that music continues to be a strategic priority for the Department for Education. We look forward to continuing to develop and improve our work with schools, in music centres, in other community settings as well as with our partners, locally, regionally and nationally.

wsm youth orch @ schools proms

Watford School of Music Youth Orchestra performed at the Royal Albert Hall this week as part of the Music for Youth School Schools Proms. This is a fantastic showcase of the wide variety of music making that is going on across the country. It was a real privilege, not only to hear our orchestra play so fantastically well, but also to hear all the other groups and ensembles perform. As we discuss with schools and music centres how our groups and activities can grow and develop in the future we can take real inspiration from what young people are already achieving and also the whole range of new approaches that are so fantastically showcased at events such as Music for Youth. Well done to all the performers!
