Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme

This is a scheme run by Hertfordshire Music Service that allows parents and carers to purchase a musical instrument less VAT, provided that this instrument is required for individual or group tuition taught by Hertfordshire Music Service instrumental teachers in Maintained Schools or Music Centres (ie on HCC premises)

The scheme has been set up in conjunction with instrumental retailers who have a well-established, national reputation.

  • The various makes and models of instruments have been recommended by our teachers for both quality and value.
  • The instruments come with full manufacturers’ guarantees and we deliver either to schools or the nearest County Music Centre.

Hertfordshire Music Service cannot sell musical instruments less VAT to parents and carers of pupils who attend one of our Academies. Academies however can purchase instruments from us (or any other supplier) and sell them to parents less the VAT. This is due to changes of the VAT status of Academies.*

Additionally, pupils attending an Academy but playing in a regular Music Centre group are still able to benefit from the scheme direct from Hertfordshire Music Service.

*An Academy can purchase a musical instrument inclusive of VAT + admin fees etc and are permitted to sell it to a parent less VAT provided the pupil is receiving tuition provided by the Academy (including lessons delivered by Hertfordshire Music Service) and then recover the VAT from HMRC on their own VAT return.

If your child attends an Academy and you require further clarification please contact us.
