Using Music & Arts to Develop Communication Skills in Special Schools

Over the last three years Judy Manning, professional musician and Lead Teacher for SEN, Hertfordshire Music Service, has been using music and the arts in special schools to help pupils develop communication skills. The combination of visual and aural arts has proved to be an effective approach to stimulate, educate and encourage social engagement, self confidence and motivation to learn.
‘Judy's commitment to delivering an accessible arts experience to young people with SEN has significantly increased our pupils' access to a wide range of enjoyable activities. This has resulted in improvements in their confidence and communication skills, as well as extending their understanding of music and the arts.’

This practical and fun CPD workshop Judy and her colleague, professional visual artist, Jo Howe, will equip teachers with the skills and resources to deliver high quality arts projects in school either as a one off lesson, a short course or as part of Arts Award, a nationally accredited qualification.
Guide to Running an Arts Week

Alex McIntyre, professional visual artist, Creative Partnerships Creative Agent and author of ‘A Guide to Running an Arts Week’ will take teachers through the planning and running of an Arts Week including ideas for project work, sourcing materials and resources, finding and contracting creative professionals and inviting parents. Participants will also receive an undated copy of the ‘Guide to Running an Arts Week’.
Running Arts Award in School

Arts Award is a nationally accredited qualification which is increasingly been used in schools. Arts Award comes with performance points for the school which appear on the contextual value added measure and also has significance to attainment league tables. Schools that want to apply for Artsmark will need to be delivering Arts Award or to be planning to deliver the award if they are to gain the kite mark. Martin Russell, Arts Award Adviser, Trainer and Moderator, will explore the benefits Arts Award can bring to your school, models of best practice and the all important points system. Martin will be available through the day for one to one surgeries.

This workshop is for schools interested in finding out more about the benefits creative learning can bring your school. We will highlight examples of good practice and share ideas on how to use creative approaches to raise attainment and engagement in learning; develop a creative curriculum and increase parental involvement. There will also be an opportunity to work directly with artists skilled in creative learning who will provide practical ideas and resources that can be used directly in the classroom.
Young People’s Writing Online

Having your writing published – whether online or in print – empowers and motivates, turning what might otherwise have been an academic exercise into an authentic and meaningful experience. But how are books and magazines brought into being in the real world? Professional writer and publisher Vicky Wilson provides an insight into how publishing works, introducing the people and processes involved in putting together a book or magazine. Come along to take part in an editorial meeting, brainstorm feature ideas, draw up plans for marketing and publicity and debate cover images and design.
NQT Introduction to Creative Learning

This workshop offers practical strategies and tools to introduce creativity and engagement in learning in ANY lesson across the curriculum. Activities will open up discussion around effective teaching practice and core principles of creative Learning and offer time and support to plan new approaches.

Storytelling and the Imagination

Master Storyteller, Danya Miller, and Martins Wood Primary School Deputy
Head Teacher, Anne Barber, will lead this playful, interactive workshop based
on ‘Storytelling and the Imagination’, using their experience of working with
children of all ages in schools.
As children listen to stories their imaginations are free to wander, self esteem
is developed and team spirit encouraged. Storytelling can have a significant
impact on language both spoken and written and indeed on all areas of
learning.

Using animation and film making in developing literacy across the curriculum.

Animation and film software is becoming increasingly easy to use. Film maker, Justin Alder, and Animator, Sean Clark, will demonstrate the best of the software and how it can be applied to storytelling in school. Over the day there will be an opportunity to try out the software under the guidance of Justin and Sean. You can also be filmed taking part in a horror film, fairy tale or running in terror from a dinosaur!
